Sliders

The Slider Is the rotating image or the image you see that keeps moving on the homepage, this is called image sliders. use high quality image and you wont need any content, the images will speak for themselves.

There are two kinds of slider in the freshman theme, the basic slider and the advanced slider. The basic slider consists of only a basic image width of 960px and a height of 364px, now this is a basic slider that has no content in it, no title to represent the image only links to the post. For the advanced Slider This slider is a very complex and detailed slider that has both Title, sub title and a little Short description of the title, with some matching fancy animation. now lets begin creating sliders.

Basic Slider

To Start Creating Basic Slider go to you admin page or wp-admin page, then on the left side of the screen look for a custom post called “Slider” see screen shot below.

Click The Add New button, and you will be redirected a new page this will look like a typical blog post page. Insert the Title you want for that slider. the below write a content about that slider. now for the image that will represent the slider will discuss in this topic, first of you must understand how to use featured images, featured images represents as your slider images on the homepage if you don’t know how to use featured images then click this link and read on how to upload featured images. and come back here when you are done.

Warning!

The Freshman Options has a built in function to auto resize the image using the wordpress function called add_image_size() this resize the image automatically, the disadvantage with this is it resizes image with ratio’s to balance the quality of the picture, so please we advise you upload basic slider images with a MINIMUM! of 960px in width and 370px in height to avoid improper display of images.

Now visit your homepage you will notice that there aren’t any sliders yet, that is because by default the slider is not enabled,  you can turn on/off the sliders anytime you want by simple going into the Freshman Options simply go to Appearance<Freshman Options<Sliders tabs see screen shots below to understand more.

Portfolio

Portfolio is a gallery a set of collection of pictures or videos of your projects, art works or products, organize them using this feature instead of using pages or blog posts to represent your portfolio. this section of the documentation will cover up all the necessary information to start up your portfolio.

To start using portfolio first and foremost is to create a page to display your portfolio gallery. to start displaying portfolios we will create a special page which can display gallery using a wordpress feature called “Templates” freshman theme has built in templates specially for portfolio’s. Lets begin creating portfolio page templates.

Creating Portfolio pages

Go to your admin page or simply wp-admin and on the left side of the screen you can see pages click add new to start creating a page. see screen shot below for a better understanding of the pages.

Now in the Title for our example lets name this new page Portfolio three columns oh and don’t bother writing content in this page this will not get displayed in the gallery. now your wondering how you can create a special template for portfolio, well here it is, to create a special template for portfolio scroll down a bit look in the right side of the editor you will eventually see a widget that has a label or is called page attributes. see screen shots below.

Now in the set of templates please choose portfolio three column this will create a page that displays three column of portfolio. choose two and it will display two columns, choose four and it will create a four column portfolio. click save or publish you now have a three column portfolio gallery. visit your homepage and you will see a new navigation item that says portfolio three columns click it and you will then be linked to the gallery page, you will notice that it is empty at the moment. well we heaven’t add a portfolio item yet did we?

Creating Portfolio Items

Now we will create portfolio items, on the left side of the screen you will see a custom post page called portfolio click add new and you are now ready to create a new portfolio. see screen shot below.

Enter the title of the portfolio item, this will represent your portfolio item. Then In the content write down the info for the portfolio item. now for the image of the portfolio i assume after reading the slider section you now know how to use featured image, if not please click here to know more about featured images and how to use it the right way. back to our topic upload a featured image and set it as featured image then click save or publish you are now done.

Repeat the steps on creating portfolio items create as many as you can, but in our example lets create only at least 6 items. when all is done visit your home page and navigate through the menu’s and go to the portfolio page we created earlier, you will now see the portfolio items.

Select the portfolio settings tab, under this tab you will see a two checkbox options select and check the enable homepage portfolio this will then enable and show the your recent portfolio in the homepage.

Enabling the Filtering of portfolio

You can choose to have this extra feature we have include for you, it is called portfolio filter or sorting, you can organize projects by groups based on its categories. to do this first enable the filterable portfolio in the freshman options see screenshot above.

After you have done enabling its options go to portfolio’s and edit some portfolio items/post we will add a new Custom field for the portfolio, I assume you already know about how to create custom fields and how to use them. if now please click here to ream more about Custom Posts.

Now lets create a custom field for each portfolio item/post this is going to seprate each portfolio based on its categories edit atleast 3 items/post to see its functionality.

As you can see in the screen shot above i edited a previous portfolio post/item and i have put Custom fields in it, using the keyword portfolio_filter and have two values these values will represent its categories and will group them accordingly. click save and visit your portfolio gallery.
